9 March: Elections

This Friday night is Election Night.

"What is election night?" you might wonder. Well, the EMYF is run by a committee (in the Methodist tradition) which is responsible for running the youth group on a weekly basis. They plan and organise programs, take care of the finances, and most importantly, they look after every one of you. After all, the youth doesn't run itself, does it?

Each year elections are held to determine who these very privileged people are. The criteria we have are:
  • Must be 16 years of age this year
  • Must be a regular member (ie. for more than three months)
  • Must be a member of the Kingsway Methodist Church (or willing to be one this year). With this you must also be baptised

These criteria are in place to ensure the leaders of the youth group are sincere, willing and capable to guide each person into a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God, and also with each other. Of course, you must also have a heart to serve also!

If you are eligible, your name should be up on the list of candidates which Ivan will have drawn up and will be the form for Friday night. If you are there but don't wish to be - due to any reason - you'll have the opportunity to say why this Friday.

Following a short talk by Rev Elijah Chew, each person present at youth this Friday will have the opportunity to vote for whom they think would be a capable committee member. This will be cast as a ballot, and the votes will be counted straight after. While the votes are being counted, the Melbourne EMYF's short film will be shown. It's entitled "Destination" and was the offical short film of the 12th Youth Convention held in Melbourne at the end of last year. It is a great movie and is a different take to what you might expect from a traditional Christian film...

After the film, the results will be announced. The new committee will then meet and decide on who takes on which role. We trust that God will use every one of you, and all the votes, to end up with a great commitee for 2007-2008; that He will guide our hands and our thoughts.
