Welcome the humble ELECTONE (electronic organ)

The Electone.. What might this be? It's a cross between the synthesizer and the organ with the pedal board. Often deemed to be the "b@stard-child" or "shareware version" of the piano or synthesizer, i grew up playing this instrument. It requires you to use all 4 limbs to maximize expression and the dynamics of the song you are playing. The right hand usually plays the melodies and counter melodies while the left hand plays the chords and accompaniment. The left and right foot handles the bassline and various other programmable features of the organ such as patch changes (change in sounds throughout the song), pitch bending, volume and the start and stop for the various tempos and drumbeats.

Here's a link to more info on the electone. I reckon the church should invest in one of the Yamaha Stageas! hehe!

Song of the day for 24-12-2006! Hook and Sling by Eddie Bo (James Black on drums)

A tribute to one of the fathers of FUNK!

Though he's little known outside of New Orleans and never recorded an album under his own name, drummer James Black was a Crescent City legend capable of performing everything from complex modernist jazz to gritty funk. An accomplished composer as well, Black had a reputation for being an irascible bandleader, intimidating with his personality just as much as his skill. Born in New Orleans on February 1, 1940, Black soaked up the city's trademark "second line" rhythms from a young age, and by the early '60s was already doing session work for the likes of Fats Domino. His main interest was jazz, however, and he played in a group with the young Ellis Marsalis on piano and Nat Perrilliat on sax. Nat Adderley (along with brother Cannonball) used all three on his 1962 session In the Bag, to which Black contributed two compositions. The following year, Marsalis cut an underrated album of modern jazz called Monkey Puzzle; this time out Black handled four of the seven compositions, including the intricate 5/4 piece "Magnolia Triangle," which ranks as perhaps his greatest work. Black went on to play with Yusef Lateef and Lionel Hampton in the mid-'60s, although his career was interrupted by a stint in the Angola State Penitentiary (during which time he actually played in a prison band with blues pianist James Booker and saxophonist Charles Neville).

In the late '60s, Black paid the bills with R&B gigs around New Orleans, and in 1968 caught on at the Scram label as a house drummer. He played on Eddie Bo's "Hook and Sling," helping to make it one of the great New Orleans funk singles, and soon took his place alongside Smokey Johnson and the Meters' Ziggy Modeliste as one of the city's top funky drummers. Meanwhile, he continued to play jazz on the side as part of Ellis Marsalis' band ELM Music Company; they took up residency at Lu and Charlie's beginning in 1972 and became local favorites. During the '70s, Black also led his own group, the James Black Ensemble, which often featured his longtime girlfriend "Sister Mary" Bonette on vocals. He attempted several times to record a full-length album, including once for the Sound of New Orleans label and another time at Allen Toussaint's studio, but the sessions never progressed beyond a few tracks. Black continued performing in New Orleans into the '80s, still playing with Ellis Marsalis (as well as Marsalis' then-teenage pupil, Harry Connick Jr.); he also served as the drummer for the 1982 Marsalis Family album Fathers and Sons. Black died of a drug overdose on August 30, 1988.

In 2002, the Night Train label assembled a compilation of mostly unreleased tracks, many from Black's aborted LP sessions; I Need Altitude: Rare and Unreleased New Orleans Jazz and Funk, 1968-1978 ran the gamut from heavy funk and psychedelic soul to soul-jazz, and featured several of the drummer's own vocals. In the spring of 2003, Ellis and Wynton Marsalis presented a program of Black compositions as part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center series.

The First Noel! 1 more day to Christmas!

The First Noel !

The First Noel is unknown in origin but is generally thought to be English dating back to the sixteenth century. There is a misconception that the First Noel was French and it is believed that this is because of the French spelling of Noel as opposed to the olde English Anglo-Saxon spelling of the word as in Nowell. After England was captured by the Normans numerous words were adopted from the Norman French language and Noel was re-spelt as Nowell, early printed versions of this carol use the Nowell spelling. The First Noel was first published in 1833 when it appeared in "Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern," a collection of seasonal carols gathered by William B. Sandys.

The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same star
Three Wise men came from country far
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

This star drew nigh to the northwest
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest
And there it did both Pause and stay
Right o'er the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those Wise men three
Full reverently upon their knee
And offered there in His presence
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
And with his blood mankind has bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Song fof the day for 23-12-2006! Going the Distance by Dj Junk

Thanks to Jing Wei who passed me this MP3. The orchestral song going on in the background sounds SUPER familiar but i can't seem to pin-point where it came from. Basically it's a remixed version of the song with a rather plain drumtrack going on, but what interests me is the rather melodic and rhythmic twist to the bass line at arouind 0:51 in the song. Hope you enjoy this, it's rather light hearted and easy listening.

I found this video rather inspirational haha!

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear! 2 more days to Christmas!

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear was written by Edmund Hamilton Sears in 1849. The carol started life as a poem written by its author who was a minister living in Massachusetts at the time. The music for It Came Upon A Midnight Clear was composed by American musician Richard Storrs Willis in 1859 who was inspired by the words of the poem.

It came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth,
To touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, goodwill to men
From heavens all gracious King!"
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled;
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world:
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing,
And ever o'er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.

O ye beneath life's crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow;
Look now, for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing;
Oh rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing.

For lo! the days are hastening on,
By prophets seen of old,
When with the ever-circling years
Shall come the time foretold,
When the new heaven and earth shall own
The Prince of Peace, their King,
And the whole world send back the song
Which now the angels sing.

Song of the day for 22-12-2006! Paul Baloche - Praise Adonai!

VERSE:
Who is like Him
the Lion and the Lamb
Seated on the throne
Mountains bow down
Every ocean roars
To the Lord of hosts

CHORUS:
Praise Adonai
From the rising of the sun
'Til the end of every day
Praise Adonai
All the nations of the earth
All the angels and the saints
Sing praise

What Child is this! 3 more days to Christmas!

What child is this who laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh
Come peasant king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him

Raise, raise the song on high
The Virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born
The Babe, the Son of Mary
The Babe, the Son of Mary, Mary

O Holy Night! 4 days to Christmas!

O Holy Night Lyrics
The words and lyrics of the old carol 'O Holy Night' were written by Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure in 1847. Cappeau was a wine seller by trade but was asked by the parish priest to write a poem for Christmas. He obliged and wrote the beautiful words of the hymn. He then realised that it should have music to accompany the words and he approached his friend Adolphe Charles Adams(1803-1856). He agreed and the music for the poem was therefore composed by Adolphe Charles Adams. Adolphe had attended the Paris conservatoire and forged a brilliant career as a composer. It was translated into English by John Sullivan Dwight (1812-1893).

O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

Song of the day for 21-12-2006! Last Christmas by George Michael!

Heheh, something from the 80's! Hope you guys like this song.

[CHORUS:]
Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year
To save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

[CHORUS:]

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance
But you still catch my eye
Tell me baby
Do you recognize me?
Well
It's been a year
It doesn't surprise me
I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I love you"
I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now
I know you'd fool me again

[CHORUS]

A crowded room
Friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you
And your soul of ice
My god I thought you were
Someone to rely on
Me?
I guess I was a shoulder to cry on

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again

[CHORUS x2]

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover buy you tore him apart
Maybe next year I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special.

I Wonder When I Wander! 6 Days to Christmas!

I wonder as I wander
Out under the sky
How Jesus the Savior
Did come for to die
For poor on'ry people
Like you and like I
I wonder as I wander
Out under the sky

When Mary birthed Jesus,
'Twas in a cow's stall
With wise men and farmers
And shepherds and all
But high from God's heaven,
A star's light did fall
And the promise of ages
It then did recall

If Jesus had wanted
For any wee thing
A star in the sky
Or a bird on the wing
Or all of God's angels
In heav'n for to sing
He surely could have it,
'Cause He was the King

I wonder as I wander
Out under the sky
How Jesus the Savior
Did come for to die
For poor on'ry people
Like you and like I
I wonder as I wander
Out under the sky

Song of the day for 19-12-2006! BECK OST - Moon on the water

This is the original version of the song we did for Eve's night. Enjoy!

Full moon sways
Gently in the night of one fine day

On my way
Looking for a moment with my dear

Full moon waves
Slowly on the surface of the lake

You were there
Smiling in my arms for all those years

What a fool
I don't know 'bout tomorrow
What it's like to be
Ah...

I was fool
Couldn't let myself to go
Even though I feel
The end

Old love affair
Floating like a bird resting her wings

You were there
Smiling in my arms for all those years

Song of the day for 18-12-2006! Foreign Sand

This is a song about how we should love each other despite what race or creed we're from.

By my favourite Japanese artist YOSHIKI i love the way he blends orchestral work with hard hitting drums :)

If you guys take note of his drumming, you'll realise that my drumming style is quite similar to his.. Haha!

Happy listening.

P.S : The singer happens to be ROGER TAYLOR (The drummer from Queen, but he has one heck of a voice as well!)

Foreign Sand
lyrics : Roger Taylor
Music : Yoshiki

Here we go - ain't it grand
Here we stand on Foreign Sand - We 're not alone

Why do we fear - what we don't understand

Try to plant a seed - fulfill the need
To make it grow - just say hello

And when you 're far from home
Try to learn from what you see
Your eyes will tell you everything you need

Why do we dread - what we don't really know
Come not as concubine - come not as foe
Come with intentions clearly shown
Try to plant a seed - fulfill the need
To make it grow - just say hello

And tho you 're far from home
Try to learn from all you see
Your mind will tell you everything you need
Everything you need

Here we go - ain't it grand
Here we stand on Foreign Sand
We 're not alone

Red, yellow, black and white - every man stand in the light
Stand not alone
It 's not a lie - it's not a sham
We play for keeps - it 's not a scam
No bigotry - we 're hand in hand
It ain't a cinch - we make a stand
We learn to live on Foreign Sand
Just say hello

Why do we despise - when we can't even speak
We keep on spreading lies - far as we know
It 's the only way to be
Try to plant a seed - fulfill the need
To make it grow - just try hello

And tho you 're far from home
Try to learn what you could be
Your heart will tell you everything you need

And tho you 're far from home
Try to learn what you could be
Your heart will tell you everything you need
Even though you stand
Here you stand on Foreign Sand

Ain't it grand - here we stand
On Foreign Sand
Together we stand
On Foreign Sand
Together we stand
Here we stand
On Foreign Sand

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum

Song of the day for 17-12-2006 Better Man!

Anyone here a fan of Nicholas Tse ?

Silent Night! 8 more days to Christmas!

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth "

Song for the day 16-12-2006 Background music to Chizuru Kagura's stage from the King of fighters 1998

Alright guys here's another song taken from the King of fighters 1998 which has a totally different feel from the previous one i posted. This is more of like a typical rock song with pretty good guitar work. Pay attention particularly to the distorted guitar in the beginning along with palm muting to produce the rhythm. There's alot to talk about this song but i've thought it would be better for you guys to study and appreciate it yourselves ;)

Feel free to post any comments if you want!

Man i love the Japanese, their rock music is always Melodic and yet technically inclined.

By the way this will be one heck of a song to jam! Haha!

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen! 9 more days till Christmas!

By Jordan Rudess again guys! Enjoy!

God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay,
Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day;
To save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray.

Refrain

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;
O tidings of comfort and joy

In Bethlehem, in Israel, this blessed Babe was born,
And laid within a manger upon this blessed morn;
The which His mother Mary did nothing take in scorn.

Refrain

From God our heavenly Father a blessed angel came;
And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same;
How that in Bethlehem was born the son of God by name.

Refrain

"Fear not, then," said the angel, "Let nothing you afright
This day is born a Savior of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him from Satan's power and might."

Refrain

The shepherds at those tidings rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding in tempest, storm and wind,
And went to Bethl'em straightaway this blessed Babe to find.

Refrain

But when to Bethlehem they came where our dear Savior lay,
They found Him in a manger where oxen feed on hay;
His mother Mary kneeling unto the Lord did pray.

Refrain

Now to the Lord sing praises all you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas all others doth deface.

Refrain

God bless the ruler of this house, and send him long to reign,
And many a merry Christmas may live to see again;
Among your friends and kindred that live both far and near--

That God send you a happy new year, happy new year,
And God send you a happy new year.

Have Yourselves a White Christmas! 10 more days till Christmas!

White Christmas by Jordan Rudess (member of dream theater) taken from the "Christmas Sky" album

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten,
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

Song of the day 15-12-2006 (Background music to Iori Yagami's stage from the King of Fighters 1997)

Ok guys, i was feeling kinda bored today and decided to upload some old song from my archive. Let the funk begin! Enjoy!

I'll try my best to posts songs of different genres or focusing on different aspects in terms in the orchestration of the instruments or the focus and driving aspect of the role of the different instruments.

For this song i think the 2 main instruments that give this song it's main FUNK characteristic are the Drums and Bass.

As you can hear the rhythmic pattern play between the drums and bass which was achieved by mostly intense bass slapping for the bass and pretty funky work on the drums as well!

Feel free to comment on this song guys with details if possible, it's good to learn something new everyday!

Youth Convention: A brief summary

Hi guys,

It's Jono here. Youth Convention 2006 has officially ended and by now most of the Perth people are back in Perth. I just wanted to share a bit of the happenings during the convention and how it has taught (me, at least) us a bit about mission!

As you know the Theme was "Out of the world, into the world" and Edwin wrote the English Theme Song which was chosen. He got an award for that which he is sharing with Sebastian. Nice!

The camp was quite relaxed, consisting of mainly - a talk followed by free time, a meal, some games in the afternoon, dinner and a short program at night. Thankfully the programs were light and this gave us plenty of free time to explore the very large camp site and also rest. We may be posting some pictures on this website (Edwin? Sean? If you have time?) to show you how it looked.

It was a fantastic camp site - the cabins were very nicely kept, they provided us with a mattress, bedsheets and pillows! And they were warm too (the fact that it was Summer helped). The showers were quite nice too. The food was enjoyable (although they did have some problems with quantity the first two days).

What programs were there? Dr. Omar Djoeandy was the speaker for the English section and gave three talks on "Redefining Success". I won't talk too much about this here; I believe one of our future Youth programs will be giving a summary of the camp too. For me personally it was a huge challenge and totally spun my train of thinking in a new direction. The talks were fantastic and ended with about 15 commitments for mission work.

In terms of social activities we had three main events. Firstly, Amazing Race with 12 groups competing for the fastest finish. There were 8 'events', with a mix of physical and intellectual challenges. That was great! Secondly, there was a movie entitled "Destination" which was made by the Camberwell Youth which was extremely professional and very well made. We'll try get a copy of the movie and show it to you guys. Thirdly there was a Captain's Ball league (which I'm sure if more of our Youth were there we would have done very well!) in our groups, too.

As for the rest of convention, I will leave that to the Perth people coming home to tell you all. Next year's convention will be in Sydney - I hope that many of you can come! It seems that every year gets better and better. This year our Perth group went around Melbourne for 2 days before Convention, sightseeing and walking around. I believe that only a few are left here in Melbourne - Amy, Sean, Thomas, Kim and Cynthia (Tan), Dennis, Rebecca and Regina. They'll all be back within the next week.

God bless you all, I'll see you next year!
